Did you know heartworms, hookworms, fleas, tapeworms, roundworms, ringworm, ear mites, ticks, and head lice cause many of the most serious pet health complications?

Ticks discussion on symptoms, pictures, treatments, medications, and prevention.

Ticks can cause debilitating symptoms, complications, and even sudden death in dogs and cats.

What are ticks?

Ticks are tiny black, or brown, eight-legged parasitic insects with a hard shell that bury their mouths in the underside of their hosts skin.

Once they are attached they often swell to 400 – 500% of their original size as they fill up with the host blood.

They are often found in tall grasses and will attach themselves to hosts as they walk past.

All of these complications can be avoided or minimized with simple preventative steps.  Prevention is the key to controlling and avoiding the health problems associated with these highly contagious and common parasites.

Ticks symptoms

Ticks transmit the widest variety of pathogens of any blood sucking arthropod, including bacteria, rickettsiae, protozoa, and viruses. Some human diseases of current interest in the United States caused by tick-borne pathogens include Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, rocky mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and tick-borne relapsing fever.

After the tick bite it may take a couple of weeks to feel symptoms which may include:

  • shortness of breath

  • nausea and vomiting

  • flu and fever

  • numbness and weakness

  • rash or redness

  • confusion

  • joint pain and swelling

  • heart palpitations

Ticks treatment

Treatment of ticks involves careful removal of the tick, cleaning the wound, and possible treatments and medications for potential diseases carried by the tick.

To remove a tick:

  • cover hands with protective rubber gloves

  • use tweezers and concentrate on removing the head portion of the tick

  • don't squeeze the body open

  • keep the tick in a jar in case disease testing is required

Ticks prevention
